Faculty Bios

Trish Angulo, Ed.D.



TRISH ANGULO's educational background and work experience have been as diverse as her ife. She earned a bachelor's degree in theatre and human services at Metro State University. Through college, she participated in theatre for social change such as drug abuse prevention education for youth, racial and gender justice, and homeless advocacy. For 7 years she worked as a semi-professional actor doing musical comedy in Chicago, Los Angeles, and the Twin Cities. She completed a master's degree in liberal studies with a business leadership emphasis at Hamline University while working in a variety of human services positions.

In 1999, Trish joined the academic world when she took a position as an internship coordinator in the department of business and economics in the College of Arts and Sciences here at Bethel. While working on her doctorate in education, she studied organizational leadership, conflict management/mediation, racial/gender justice, and adult learning development. She also completed a certified mediator training program at Hamline University Law School and is listed in the Minnesota Supreme Court Registry of mediators. Her specialties are employment and intercultural community disputes.

Trish researched faculty teaching methods and adult student learning style preferences for her doctorate.

After serving as a teaching partner for the College of Adult & Professional Studies, Trish was hired in 2007 as the program director for the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program. She teaches Managing Conflict through Dialogue, Organizational Behavior, Foundations of Business Management, Leading and Change, Group Communication and Conflict, and many others.

Trish's hobbies include reading, bike riding, cooking, playing piano, participating in the finearts, gardening, boating, volleyball, and barbequing with friends and family in the backyard. Her husband, Gerardo, is from Venezuela. They have large families in both Minnesota and Venezuela. They currently live in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Greg Bownik, M.A.


GREG BOWNIK graduated from Bethel University with an MA degree in Organizational Leadership in 2000 and and a BA degree in Organizational Studies in 1992. He also has an associate of arts degree from North Hennepin Community College. He studied Mandarin Chinese from 1984-1986 at the University of Minnesota and earned a four-course certificate in Proactive Leadership for Higher Education from e-Cornell in 2005.
Teaching experience includes Minnesota School of Business, Rasmussen College, High-Tech Institute, and North Hennepin Community College (Center for Training and Development). Subjects include courses on global issues, academic writing, publicity writing, supervision and management, and communication.

Prior to teaching in higher education, Greg worked in the health insurance industry for 14 years as a medical claims examiner, medical claims auditor, and trainer.

Debra Castner, Ed.D.

DEB CASTNER has been a special education teacher for over twenty years. She currently teaches special needs students’ 5th-7th grade in the Westonka School District. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and  recently completed a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Hamline University.

Her professional interests include making a connection and promoting positive relationships with students and their families; strengthening the support services within the school, family, and community; and creating leaders through knowledge, reflection, validation, respect, faith, and scholarship. 

Deb has two grown daughters. In her free time she enjoys running, biking, reading, and taking long walks with her two dogs, Batman and Robin.

Brenda Cimbura, M.A.

BRENDA CIMBURA is a communication strategist, speaker and organizational consultant. Her consulting practice, works with leaders who want to discover the rare ideas that will advance their relational influence and organizational purpose. Brenda has a master's degree from Wheaton College in communications and has taught at Bethel University since 1997. She and her husband Tim have two toddler daughters and attend Eagle Brook Church.”

Andrew Gess, Ph.D.

Andrew Gess

ANDREW GESS moved to Minnesota after having taught at George Fox University in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (Oregon) for almost a decade. His research interests include Organizational Communication, Corporate Communication, Rhetorical Criticism, Media Ecology, Social Movement studies, and Intercultural Communication.

Dr. Gess has a Ph.D. in Communication from Regent University; he also holds graduate degrees from Oregon State University in Adult Education/Training and Development, and Fuller Theological Seminary in Theology/Cross-Cultural Studies. His dissertation was on Ideographic Analysis--a form of rhetorical criticism that allows one to track social movement through language.

Dr. Gess has worked in a variety of organizations outside of academia, including time at Intel Corporation as a Training and Development professional.

Suz Grimes, M.A.

Suz Grimes

SUZ GRIMES holds a Masters of Arts in Human Resource Development and a certificate in Organization Development from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. Her undergraduate degree is from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Prior to joining People Management in 1992, she worked in the corporate sector for 10 years in Executive Training and Development.

For the past fifteen years she has provided executive consulting on job-fit, team building, leadership development and retained search. As a certified and licensed trainer and coach in the People Management Executive Coaching process “Who do you think you are?®”, she facilitates corporate training of executive coaches, while coaching individual clients to effectiveness and excellence.

She also develops and delivers SIMA® curriculum to organizations, not-for-profits and colleges. She partnered in development of Max Lucado’s “Cure for the Common Life” trade book, and delivers workshops to help individuals match their area of giftedness to ministries, careers and life.

Sam Helgerson, A.B.D.

Sam Helgerson

SAM HELGERSON is the owner of Envoy Editorial Services, and he has been teaching at Bethel University since 2002, first as an adjunct professor and now as a teaching partner. He serves as co-director of faculty development in the College of Adult & Professional Studies and Graduate School. Sam is pursuing a Ph.D. in Adult and Postsecondary Education at Capella University.

In his 20 years of experience in the business world, Sam has served as a writer, editor, and consultant. He has worked as a consultant in business processes, training development, and communications. for companies such as 3M, Best Buy, Delphax Technologies, Green Giant, U.S. Bank, and others. Sam has also served as president of Great Ridge Group, Inc., and vice-president of the board for Christian Student Fellowship on the St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota.

Dave Horsager, M.A.

Dave Horsager

The mission of DAVID HORSAGER M.A. CSP is to share life-changing truth in an impacting way. He is an award-winning speaker, entrepreneur, and producer.

Dave’s expertise is in leadership and communication. At age 21 Dave had already started his own company and was being hired to speak at a variety of events. After college he directed and grew a significant youth and family development organization in Arkansas (K-Life, Inc.). He united a board, staff, and volunteer base under a common vision.

In 1999 he left it a thriving and powerful organization and moved back to Minnesota to start a new ministry and business of speaking and producing. David’s presentations are driven by his passion to inspire organizations and individuals to gain the “Trust Edge” TM and leave a great and lasting legacy.

Dave has since earned his Masters in Organizational Leadership and in 2007 received the elite Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation. Dave also serves as adjunct professor of Organizational Leadership for Bethel University’s Master’s program.

An engaging leadership strategist, Dave shares proven principles that grow reputation, relationships, revenue, and results. If there is one consistent response we hear it is that people love to work with Dave. He has taken the platform on four continents and throughout the United States. Dave also developed the Trust Temp 360 Assessment and has written extensively on “Trust” as the key element of successful organizations and leaders.

Chris Kaiser, M.A.

Chris Kaiser

CHRIS KAISER spent fifteen years managing a family business with her husband, and then managing a printing organization before earning her master's degree in Organizational Leadership at Bethel University. Her final project focused on emotional intelligence in the workplace As a result, Chris started a consulting company to offer her emotional intelligence assessment services to individuals and organizations. Chris lives in Shoreview with her husband and three teenage children and enjoys spending time with friends and family on Snail Lake.

Shelley Robinson, M.S.

Shelley Robinson

SHELLEY ROBINSON currently serves as the Executive Director of Range Center, Inc., a large non-profit organization providing comprehensive services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. As Executive Director, Shelley is responsible for over 200+ employees, and an annual budget of 6.5 million dollars and has oversight responsibilities of 17 locations throughout Northeastern Minnesota. Range Center, Inc. is organized by the United Steelworkers of America allowing Shelley opportunity to have extensive and practical experience in labor relations, organization development, and policy analysis.

In addition to her work in human services, Shelley was appointed by MN Speaker of the House, Margaret Anderson-Kelliher, to serve as a citizen member on the Iron Range Resources Board; an agency established to advance regional growth by stabilizing and enhancing the economy of northeastern Minnesota's Taconite Assistance Area. Shelley serves several other local, regional, and state boards including Hibbing Community College, Mesabi Range Community & Technical College, United Way of Northeastern Minnesota, Hibbing Chamber of Commerce, Lake Superior Labor Management Association, and the Central Iron Range Initiative for Economic Development.

Shelley has a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from the University of Montana with concentrations in special education and secondary education – behavioral science. Her graduate work includes a Master of Science degree from St. Cloud State University in educational leadership. In 2002, she completed requirements for the Sixth Year Administrative Licensure program for district superintendent and K-12 principal. Currently, she is a Doctoral Candidate through St. Mary’s University of Minnesota with a dual emphasis in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development.

Dave Schuelke, Ph.D.

Dave Schuelke

DAVID SCHUELKE is an Adjunct Professor of Communication and Leadership at Bethel University. He is a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of Illinois. His Ph.D. is in organizational communication is from Purdue University. He teaches graduate courses in the management of conflict, organizational analysis, and quantitative and qualitative research methods in communication. A professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Schuelke has served as a consultant and mediator to private and public organizations. He has authored or co-authored numerous textbooks and articles in the fields of communication and organizational behavior. Besides his teaching at Bethel, he has also taught courses at Capella University, the University of Minnesota the University of St. Thomas, and St. Mary's University. His areas of research include leadership and techniques leaders use for dealing with conflict.

Ken Smith, M.A.

Ken Smith

KEN SMITH retired from 3M after 36 years with the company in the Information Technology area. During those 36 years, Ken was involved with a variety of IT areas from application development, to IT education and training, to the introduction of PC technology into 3M. When he retired in 2004 he was the manager of the department that provided infrastructure design and support for email and collaboration technologies for 3M worldwide.

Ken earned his BS in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and his MA in Organizational Leadership from Bethel where his thesis was on the subject of followership. He has been on the adjunct faculty at Bethel since 2000. At that time he began teaching a course called Modern World Trends and Forces Impacting Organizations. Since he retired he has taken on additional courses in the BA of Communications program and the Masters program in Organizational Leadership.

Tom Sutliff, M.A., M.S.

Tom Sutliff

TOM SUTLIFF is a licensed social studies teacher. He currently teaches ninth grade courses in economics and financial literacy at Valley View Middle School, Edina, Minnesota. In 2002, he retired from the Air Force after 29 years of active duty. His last assignment was as Commander, Defense Contract Management--Twin Cities. In this role, he managed 250 people and administered Department of Defense (DoD) contracts with 200 contractors across five states in the Upper Midwest. This organization was a finalist in the 1999 President's Quality Award--one out of only nine in the entire federal government. Prior to his duties in Minnesota, Tom served at HQ USAF, Pentagon, Washington, DC where he prepared Air Force congressional testimony and briefed congressional staffs.  He also led preparation of a congressionally directed study on the B-1 Bomber and participated in development of the acquisition budget for a number of Air Force programs.

Before the Gulf War, he served as a Squadron Operations Officer in England and Deputy Commander of Operations for a Strategic Air Command unit at Exercise Elf One, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Tom is a Command Pilot with over 2,300 hours.  He is an Instructor Pilot who trained pilots in five distinct models of the C-135, a Boeing 707 type aircraft.

He was also a contracting officer for the F-15 Eagle fighter aircraft program.

His education includes a teacher’s license through Bethel University, a Master of Science from the Air Force Institute of Technology, a Master of Arts from Ball State University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Norwich University.  He is also a graduate of several DoD schools including the Program Management Course and the Executive Program Management Course.

Bernard Walker, Ph.D.

Bernard Walker

BERNARD WALKER received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago, January 2000. He also has a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Teaching experience includes teaching Philosophy at the University of St. Thomas, Bethel University and Bethel Seminary, Loyola University, National Louis University, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago State University, and the University of Chicago.

Bernard’s specialties include ethics, philosophy of religion, and critical thinking as well as logic and comparative religions.

Bernard and his wife Denise have two daughters. He enjoys tennis and martial arts.
