M.A. in Nursing Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements 2007-08

Applicants are admitted under the regulations of the most current catalog at the time they last enter Bethel.

The Master of Arts in Nursing program at Bethel University will consider applicants who:

  • Submit a completed Application for Admission form with the nonrefundable $25 application fee.
  • Submit official transcripts from all previous undergraduate and graduate course work.
  • Have earned a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university. Registered nurses with non-nursing baccalaureate degrees who apply will be considered on an individual basis and additional requirements apply, including an earlier priority application deadline.
  • Have earned an undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale.
  • Have successfully completed a college-level prerequisite course in statistics (inferential statistics content is recommended) The course must have earned at least two semester credits from a regionally accredited institution and may have been taken at the undergraduate or graduate level.

    • Statistics Self-Test
      Use this self-test and answer key to assess your current knowledge of statistical analysis and interpretation. Your performance on this self-assessment (no peeking at the answer key!) will indicate whether you need a refresher course in order to be well prepared for graduate studies. The self-test is in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. After downloading the file, you will be able to view and print the document using Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have that program on your computer, follow this link to download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Submit a Miller Analogies Test (MAT) score report (taken within the last three years). Note: Students who are required to submit a TOEFL score report are exempted from submitting an MAT score report.**
  • Submit three Admission References verifying current work or volunteer experiences that indicate academic ability, character, and leadership potential. One reference should be from the applicant's current employer, and one is preferred from an undergraduate nursing faculty member.
  • Submit a written Statement of Purpose.
  • Submit a current resume that includes prior education and work experience.
  • Have experience as a registered nurse.
  • Submit a copy of current registered nurse license. Minnesota licensure may be necessary for some practicums.
  • Submit an Computer Documentation form. Prior to admission, applicants are expected to demonstrate competency in word processing using Microsoft Word. Applicants are required to document access to a computer with the required hardware and software for use throughout the program (see pplication materials).
  • Submit Documentation of Nursing Malpractice Insurance Coverage.
  • Submit a Nursing Student Immunization Record form.
  • Submit a copy of current Mantoux test taken within the past year.
  • Submit a Request for Transfer of Credit, if applicable.
  • Submit a TOEFL examination score report (required of all international applicants and all applicants whose primary language is not English). Minimum score of 550 is required on the paper-based test; 213 on the computer-based test; or 80 on the internet-based test.
  • Indicate acceptance of Bethel Community Expectations by signing the application form.
  • Interview with faculty of the Department of Nursing.

It includes information about applying to take the test, the contents of the test, and what happens after you have taken the test. The website also includes strategies for solving analogies, sample items, and a practice test to help test-takers prepare for the MAT.

Nursing and Christian Health Ministry Concentration: Additional Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of a college-level theology course
  • Successful completion of a parish nurse certificate course

International Applicants: Additional Admission Requirements

An international applicant is any candidate who is neither a U.S. citizen nor a U.S. permanent resident alien. International applicants must:

  • Submit official evaluations of foreign transcripts from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member organization (www.naces.org) or from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS International) (www.cgfns.org).
  • Submit a completed Certificate of Finances form and a copy of current bank statement(s) to show evidence of adequate funds to cover a minimum of one year’s full tuition and living expenses. 
  • If an applicant is receiving funds from a sponsor(s), submit:
    - Notarized Affidavits of Support (I-134).
    - Letters of support from sponsors.
  • Submit a copy of I-94 (applicants currently in the U.S.).
  • Submit a copy of passport (applicants currently in the U.S.).
  • Submit a copy of current visa (applicants currently in the U.S.).
  • Submit documentation of health insurance.
  • If the applicant’s primary language is not English, have a required English language evaluation as part of the admission process.

U.S. Permanent Resident Alien Applicants: Additional Admission Requirements

U.S. Permanent Resident Alien applicants must:

  • Present the applicant's Green Card.

Prior to any clinical internship, a criminal background check must be completed.

Meeting minimal entrance requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission. Exceptions to minimum criteria may be made at the discretion of the admissions committee.
