Bethel University has several options for teachers in the field of special education, including a basic program designed for those who already possess (or do not desire) licensure in Emotional/Behavior Disorders (E/BD) or Learning Disabilities (LD), as well as licensure options that do not entail earning a master’s degree.

Applying theory to practice in special education

The special education course work in the Master of Education (M.Ed.) program emphasizes:

  • Comprehensive assessment
  • Creative teaching methodologies
  • Emphasis on collaboration between team members and service providers
  • Practical application of theoretical and research bases of the discipline
  • Assessment strategies and methodologies—accent is on classroom-based assessment
  • The knowledge base and skill refinement opportunities

Program Options

The M.Ed. course work leads to:

Degree

  • Basic Program: a non-licensure sequence designed for those who possess or do not want licensure in E/BD or LD
  • E/BD: leads to licensure in the area of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders
  • LD: leads to licensure in the area of Learning Disabilities

Licensure (for those who do not pursue a master’s degree)

  • E/BD: leads to licensure in the area of Emotional/Behavioral Disorders
  • LD: leads to licensure in the area of Learning Disabilities
  • E/BD and LD: leads to licensure in both areas

Licensure (for those without a current Minnesota teaching license). Applicants must 

  • Hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field (e.g., psychology, counseling, social work, etc.); and
  • Have relevant experience with students with E/BD and/or LD in an educational setting
  • Complete two courses prior to enrollment or transfer equivalent course work from an accredited institution:EDUC603: Introduction to K-12 Schools (2 credits) and EDUC604: Introduction to Theories and Practices of Teaching and Learning (3 credits)
