Certificate in Applied Ethnomusicology Courses

The Certificate in Applied Ethnomusicology requires 18 graduate-level credits including the following courses, plus 6 elective credits to be chosen from the ethnomusicology courses.


MUSC602 • Field of Ethnomusicology (3 credits)
The study of various philosophical approaches in the practice of ethnomusicology. Primary emphasis is given to research of the history of the discipline, comparative analysis, and readings of major contributors in the field of ethnomusicology.

MUSC606 • Applied Ethnomusicology (3 credits)
The practice of ethnomusicology including: 1) use of technology and audio/video recording practices; 2) development of professional and intercultural relationships; 3) integration of biblical and professional ethics; 4) contextualization in worship, discipleship, and evangelism; and 5) begin the development of the research thesis or project.

MUSC610 • Worship and Culture (3 credits)
A study of worship as observed in biblical examples. Scriptural principles regarding worship are applied to the life of the individual and to individual responsibility in the corporate worship experience. Emphasis is on building a theological orientation for interculturality by understanding the nature of worship as the foundation for building interdependent relationships in the kingdom of God.

MUSC611 • Ethnic Performance Ensemble (1 credit)
The performance of indigenous music on ethnic instruments for the development of individual and ensemble skill. Emphasis is on the development of an understanding of how to play the instruments and how they fit together musically and socially within the ensemble. Specific ethnic ensembles will vary depending upon student need and availability of instructors. Course may be repeated for credit. Course lab fee: $50. Graded on an S/U basis.Choose two credits from:

MUSC620-629 • Seminar in Ethnic Music
Concentrated study of a selected ethnic music culture. In scheduling each seminar, consideration will be given to student interest and the availability of appropriate guest musicians.

MUSC622 • Seminar In Ethnic Music: Native America (2 credits)

MUSC625 • Seminar in Ethnic Music: Japan (2 credits)
MUSC626 • Seminar in Ethnic Music: Middle East (2 credits)
MUSC627 • Seminar in Ethnic Music: China (2 credits)
MUSC628 • Seminar in Ethnic Music: Eastern Europe (2 credits)
MUSC629 • Seminar in Ethnic Music: Indonesia (2 credits)
